Heather.......Mandarin is a language that require a lot of time to become proficient at. A month is better than nothing, but really not enough time. If you have never been to China, it will give you a feel for the area, but I don't think you would be able to make too much progress with the language in such a short amount of time.

As far as homestay VS apartment, that is up to you. I prefer the privacy of my own apartment, but some people enjoy the home stay route as it gives you an in with a Chinese family.

On the whole, I would definitely recommend KCE. They have a nice program, good teachers, and professional staff. I studied there for almost 2 years, and would not do anything different if I had to do it over again.

Hello! Can you please send me an email about your experiences in KCE? I would like to go there for a month before I go to college in the United States. Probably May-June. Can you give me some tips on what to bring, what to expect and advise me whether it is better to choose homestay or apartment? I know some basic Mandarin already, but do you think 1 month will help me a lot?hehehe Thank you so much for your time! I hope to hear from you :)

Thanks for the reply and your willingness to reply to another in a line of similar questions!
Hope all is well with your endeavors, and maybe on the way to another language quest.
Thanks again,
Rick

Rick......they are an excellent program and a fantastic way to learn Mandarin. There isn't much nightlife in Shijiazhuang which makes it an excellent place to learn without distractions. Not many English speakers here either, which helps in forcing yourself to use Mandarin. Konall is very professional and I highly recommend them. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Hello Andrew,
My daughter is considering spending some time at Konall this summer for some full immersion Chinese before a full semester in Shanghai this fall. Trying to be the diligent father, I would love to know your candid thoughts about your experience there. She has been to China three times, is not at all interested in the "tourist" experience, and always seeks true cultural immersion with her language study.
My curiosity is more about KCE's management staff, their educational background and professional experience. Any information you might add to the mix would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you very much,
Rick Farrell

I liked it very much and got very good at Chinese. I would highly recommend it if you are looking to learn the language (the city isn't that exciting, but that doesn't matter if you just want to study). I didn't do homestay
