Remodeling underway

The bathroom remodel is going REALLY fast. I am totally blown away at how quickly they are getting things done. Here is basically what has been done:

  • Day 1 – Sign contract, EVERYTHING is removed from the bathroom and all the old tile, appliances, pipes, fixtures, etc. are uninstalled
  • Day 2 – Water sealant is laid down over the concrete. All the tile is laid
  • Day 3 – The new plumbing is installed along with the toilet, sink, and mirror
  • Day 4 – The workers have the day off. The water heater is delivered and installed
  • Day 5 – The ceiling is installed and the building’s communal pipes that we were unable to replace are covered
  • Day 6 – Small problems are fixed, the toilet had issues that are fixed, the towel rack is installed
  • Day 7 – The shower door is installed
  • Day 8 – The door was leaking water and they made a first attempt at fixing it. The glass window at the back of the bathroom is replaced

Everything is pretty much done now. The bathroom is MUCH better and I am a happy camper. There are still a few minor issues but nothing major: one of the pipes leaks, the general water shutoff valve leaks, and the shower door track lets water through. I have not been able to shower or use the washing machine yet, but the toilet is much better, the sink is better, the mirror is a god send, and the overall appearance is 100 times better.

The process was a pain at times. I had to sleep at the bath house almost every day. My teacher and I had class at home to keep an eye on the laborers. If I didn’t constantly monitor what the workers were doing, they would do things the easy way without thinking about appearance or usage. They made a HUGE mess and didn’t care about cleaning it up. I asked them all not to smoke inside, but they kept doing it. None of them seemed to bring all the equipment they needed. If they needed power, they had no extension cord. If they needed a ladder to work on the ceiling, they asked for a chair. If they needed to screw something in, they asked for a screw driver. If they needed to work at night installing lights, they didn’t bring flashlights to work with! They all wanted beverages and food. They all spit on everything, and ruined all the things I gave them to use. If I had to do it over again, there are many things I would do differently, and many things I would insist on them doing a certain way.

In the end, however, everything was fine. I am sooo happy with the way it came out, and think that it will make the quality of my life MUCH much better :)

Post some pix as soon as you can. Also, I was just wondering, how, who is going to be left with the 100% better bathroom? Is there some compensation or sorts that you are upgrading your facilities?

Hahaha that’s hilarious. When I read the first 1/2 of the post, I was thinking “I should make my comment say ‘That’s insane! For $800 bucks you get such a high quality full-overhaul???’”

But then I read on, and I revise my comment to: “There’s China for ya!”
